What inspired you to start your business? 

I SEARCHED EVERY WHERE FOR A HANDBAG WITH THE RIGHT COLOUR, STYLE & PRICE. TWO MONTHS EARLIER I HAD BOUGHT A MINIATURE PLASTIC SEWING MACHINE & DECIDED TO SEE HOW WELL IT WOULD SEW, I MADE A HIPPY BAG AND THOUGHT “IF I CAN MAKE A BAG ON THAT WHAT COULD I DO ON A REAL MACHINE. I BOUGHT A SECONDHAND MACHINE AT THE OP-SHOP AND MADE SOME SIMPLE BAGS, I NOW HAVE AN INDUSTRIAL SEWING MACHINE AND OVERLOCKER

How long have you been ‘creating’? 

I DABBLED IN LOTS OF CREATIVE MEDIUMS FOR MOST OF MY LIFE AND I FEEL THAT IT HAS TRAINED & LEAD ME TO BEING CREATIVE & SKILLED MAKING HANDBAGS

What makes what you do special or different? 

99 PERCENT OF MY MATERIALS ARE SOURCED FROM OP-SHOPS, GARAGE SALES OR DONATED. MY EYE FOR CO-ORDINATING COLOURS MAKES MY PRODUCTS DIFFERENT. EVERY PIECE IS UNIQUE. I ALSO OFFER FREE REPAIRS SHOULD ONE OF MY PRODUCTS NEED IT.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do? 

EVERY STEP IS REWARDING

What is your favourite product that you make? 

MY SHOWER CAPS BECAUSE THERE SO DIFFERENT, AND MY INDY HANDBAG BECAUSE ITS SO CHALLENGING.

What is it that you make and what skills do you use? 

I write, read, and self-publish books of poetry, short story anecdotes, life experiences and ancestral history.

What inspired you to start your business? 

The desire to make public my hidden creative writing talent (?)

Since 1969, but only seriously since 2010

Is it a full time/ part time/hobby or business? 

A hobby that has become a self-publishing business recently

Where do you sell your creations? 

To personal connections, neighbours, door-to-door, businesses such as gift shops, bookshops; at poetry and short story readings, including the offline book launch on 17 May (hopefully some of the 60 who have accepted the invitation will buy!). My book is also being distributed as an eBook through four distributors and internationally through Amazon POD (print-on-demand)

What makes what you do special or different? 

In my writing I share what I have experienced over my lifetime (lust and love, travel and scenery, catastrophes and achievements): The Closet Poet’s Collection is subtitled My Life in verse 1969 to 2014 and The Aussie with a Funny Accent is subtitled My Life in Prose and Verse

What is the most rewarding part of what you do? 

My passion is writing; however, self-publishing also means self-marketing which I have also found to be rewarding as the process identifies me more closely with the finished product.

What is your favourite product that you make? 

My 80-85% complete historical novel, working title Ancestors I Have Known which traces four streams of my family tree from the 1600s in England, Norway and Western Europe through the American Colonies to Canada. I enjoy the research and inventing the conversations of my ancestors.

Do you teach classes or workshops? No, but I spent most of my working life teaching all levels from primary through high school and TAFE to university level, so that might be a good idea. One little local note: I taught a term or two at St Mary’s Primary School in Ipswich in the late 70s, so might run into my ex-students at your market! Look forward to that possibility!

In europe you find a lot of crepe stalls special on market and shows and here I missed

I love to cook and that makes me very very happy when customers tell me how good the crepes are this is the best wages for me.

First I love what I do, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen for me is important to use local,  fresh and high quality products ( to give out a very good quality food )

What is the most rewarding part of what you do? 

When costumers come back to tell me how nice the Crepe was!

My favourite is my Strawberry cream I love to prepare Strawberrys I cant wait when SHAYLEE Strawberry farm have open days to make also Strawberry Ice cream and sorbet!

What is it that you make and what skills do you use? 

1 - Recently I've taken an interest in Leather work. Traditional methods of carving and hand stitching. I make purses, wallets, clutches and earrings out of new and repurposed leather. 

 2 - I collect vintage books, magazines, comics and sheet music and use these in my glass tile jewellery range which I have been making for about 3 years.

What inspired you to start your business?  

It all started with making some superman cuff links from a comic for a friend. Then a short while later, I visited the Brisstyle Twilight Market for the first time where I met fellow creatives and just knew this is what I wanted to do.

How long have you been ‘creating’? 

All up I'd have to say since I was a little girl. I can't give you a date or else I'd be giving away my age. So let's just say a VERY LONG TIME!

Is it a full time/ part time/hobby or business? 

At present it is more of a hobby, I like to call it my little 'cottage industry'. I've found that realistically I do need to work part time to support my little creative cottage industry.

Where do you sell your creations?

# I have an online shop on Etsy.com and Madeit.com.au 

# I also stock three Brisbane businesses with my creations.      ( The Collective Store, Wynnum; Retro Metro, Paddington; and Indie Made, Sandgate ) 

# and of course I often sell at popular Brisbane markets such as The Handmade Expo, Brisstyle Twilight Market and Suitcase Rummage.

What makes what you do special or different? 

The majority of the materials I use, whether for leather goods or comicbook jewellery, I have personally sourced locally at garage sales, de-stashes, op shops and 2nd hand book shops. They are usually one off and never to be repeated so that is what makes my products different.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do? 

It Is the response I get from a happy customer. One who loves the uniqueness of my products. I love the grins I see at a market when someone picks up a pair of my comic book earrings and realises it's Tintin or Mickey Mouse.

I love that grin.

What is your favourite product that you make? 

At the moment I adore the cute little 'wastenot' leather purses I make along with a funky leather tassel. I'm a bit addicted to making my own chunky leather tassels.

Do you teach classes or workshops? 

Yes I do. Basic leathercraft, And I love it. I have held classes at The Collective Store, Wynnum and a new venue in West End called Raw Art.

What inspired you to start your business?  

Have always sewn but bought an embroidery machine after a bad week at work.  Changed my machine at a Craft Market and decided it would be my retirement toy.  Made Christmas Stockings and personalised towels for my nieces and nephews and people said I should take my business to the markets - so that is what I have done.

How long have you been ‘creating’?  

My mother gave me a pattern when I turned 13 and said 'Now it's your turn' so I have been sewing ever since.  When I was a stay-at-home Mum many years ago I made toys for my children and family rather than buy them.  Didn't have time to do this when I went back to work and really missed creating.

Is it a full time/ part time/hobby or business? 

I guess it is a hobby/business.  Word of mouth and my Facebook page has increased the awareness of what I do

What makes what you do special or different?  

Am open to suggestions which is why I changed to hanging towels for the kitchen/bathroom.  Someone suggested that I needed to do towels for the bathroom.  I love to add things to my collections - Bunny Bags,  Personalised Christmas Stockings, etc

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?  

I love to see the look on people's faces as they peruse my products.  I love to hear comments about prices.  I love people to come back and buy more products.  I have one lady who bought products at Rocklea, messaged my page and now is a regular customer at Fig Tree Pocket Markets.

What is your favourite product that you make?  

I like them all but I guess I like to create designs for personalised towels and/or products.

New Market with Handmade and Vintage in Toowoomba

NEW MARKET
The Handmade Expo has been hatching some plans and we are excited to announce our newest Market and Venue with a twist !
We are now offering stalls at this new venue for " Vintage " products.

Many of our stallholders already dabble in vintage wares and now they will be able to combine their love of vintage with their handmade to bring you a unique and sought after shopping experience.
We are hoping for stand alone vintage stalls as well.
Our New Venue is in Toowoomba on the beautiful Darling Downs and at a great venue at the University of Southern Queensland, the Clive Berghofer centre.
